There were 1563 Royal Observation Corps Monitoring Post
constructed around Britain's coasts during the Cold War
period. The standard design was a reinforced concrete bunker
consisting of a 14ft access shaft, a toilet and a monitoring
room. They were operated by volunteers who carried out a
nuclear reporting role. All the monitoring posts were closed
in 1991.
